HIDE CAPTION
Published TUESDAY April 22, 2025: 'FRANCISCUS People's POPE' by ZUMA Press award winning photographer who covers The Vatican Evandro Inetti: Pope Francis, who rose from modest means in Argentina to become the first Jesuit and Latin American pontiff, who clashed with traditionalists in his push for a more inclusive Roman Catholic Church, and who spoke out for migrants, the poor and for the health of the planet, died on Easter Monday at the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta. He was 88. After decades of conservative leadership, Francis tried to reset the course of the Roman Catholic Church, emphasizing inclusion and care for the marginalized over adherence to doctrinal purity within the church. On Easter Sunday, the day before his death, Francis appeared in his wheelchair to bless the faithful in St. Peter's Square. The Vatican said Francis died of a stroke that put him into a coma and led his heart to fail. Welcome to 'FRANCISCUS People's POPE'
