TUESDAY July 16, 2024: 'DARK FORCES' by award winning, ZUMA Press photo-journalist Hector Adolfo Quintanar Perez who followed the 'Tim et Associes' gang: Armed groups have long played a bloody role in Haiti's history. Gang violence on average killed or injured more than one person per hour in the first three months of this year, according to UN data. Close to 600,000 Haitians have been forced from their homes, according to the UN's migration agency. The most recent widespread outbreak of gang violence has been fueled by the assassination of President Moise on 7 July 2021. The president was shot dead by a group of Colombian mercenaries at his home outside of Port-au-Prince after he had started denouncing ''dark forces'' inside Haiti. Eighty percent of the capital is now estimated to be under gang control and the people living in these areas face ''inhuman'' levels of violence. Several hundred Kenyan police officers have deployed to this Caribbean nation, the first members of a UN backed mission to beat back the militia's that control the capital, but for now Haiti's gangs are unperturbed.
