Police hand out flyers offering a reward for the killers of Aaliyah Gonzalez, 18, and Kylis Fagbemi, 20 as residents deal with aftermath of a mass shooting at the Brooklyn Homes neighborhood of Baltimore. Too often it is young people doing the shooting - and doing the dying - in record numbers. So far there have been arrests of five teens for this mass shooting, including a 15-year old charged with attempted first-degree murder. A 17-year old was apprehended after a video surfaced showing off what appeared to be an assault weapon at the event. According to his mother Tamika Linbrith, ''Kylis was a funny kid who had a personality and smile that can light up a room. His laugh was unique. Kylis used to be a math tutor and he loved technology. Kylis was a very intelligent kid. He loved to work and take care of me.'' Victim Aaliyah Gonzalez was an honor student, artist and beloved daughter. At a Baltimore Council meeting Her mother Krystal Gonzalez brought everyone to tears with stirring testimony of a mother's raw grief. 'I challenge you', she demanded. 'What is your normal?'' Let them take each other out? Is that your normal? The council heard wails of agony as she played a video captured the night she saw her daughter's body laying of the cold concrete steps of Gretna Court. Before her daughter left that night for the party, she said, 'Mom, I love you and I'll see you later.' Later never came.

They went for a snow cone that fateful night and were gunned down, together. Kavon's mother rushed to the scene after a frantic phone call as police tried to stop the bleeding. KRYSTAL GONZALEZ, mother of 18-year-old Aaliyah Gonzalez who was killed in a mass shooting during a block party at the Brooklyn Homes neighborhood, weeps as she hugs her other daughter near the spot where her daughter died. A victims advocate had given her the address to meet, but she didn't realize it was the site of her daughter's murder and couldn't walk down this block to the steps where she was slain. The next day after making funeral arrangements she said it was the first time she saw Aaliyah since the shooting. People listen as Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott holds a press conference after a mass shooting during a block party at the Brooklyn Homes neighborhood of Baltimore. Baltimore deploys it's Peace Mobile for community outreach as mental health providers offer counseling for PTSD and grief to help residents heal. Counselors talk about a higher proportion of emotional trauma that blacks deal with due to poverty and racial injustice that perpetually injures the soul. It leads to a loss of hope that kills as much as any bullet and leads to a cycle of violence. Baltimore recorded 24 homicides and 60 non-fatal shootings so far. Safe Streets holds community Peace walks with 'Stop Shooting, Start Living'' as their mantra.

She is trying to raise donations for a headstone but hasn't yet been able to visit his gravesite. Her apartment has become a shrine to her beloved boy. Posters, EKG tape and the hospital gown he wore. She recorded his last heartbeats before he passed away in the hospital and now has them in a stuffed dog as a heart wrenching memorial. She journals to him every day. 'I can't let you go I can't let you go I can't let you go I can't let you go.'

September 26, 2023 in Washington, DC was shot and killed while leaving classes at Dunbar High School. Loved ones remember 16-year-old gunned down near Dunbar High School. Maurice Jackson, known as Moe J, was shot and killed on September 26, near the intersection of New Jersey Avenue and P Street in Northwest Washington, DC., blocks away from Dunbar High School. A senseless tragedy is how those who knew and loved Maurice Jackson, known as Moe J, described his death. “I’m really devastated, and to be honest, I can’t even think. I don’t have any words. I know my faith is being tested.' an aunt said. She said she didn’t want Jackson's death to go in vain. So she, along with his relatives and friends, decided to light blue candles and release blue balloons, as it was the teen’s favorite color. “He was a lovable person, like I said. Everybody loved him. Everybody loved him, such a good person,' his aunt said. According to police, Jackson was shot and killed while leaving Dunbar High School. Video surveillance showed him talking with another group before a fight broke out. Someone pulled out a gun and fired at the teen, and he can be seen limping across the street. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died. D.C. investigators said they are looking for two suspects in connection with the shooting. “I don’t know the right words to say right now about gun violence. I'm just tired of it, I hate it, it's redundant, it's absurd,' his aunt said. 'To the young kids, to teenagers, when your parents tell you to do something, it's not that they're trying to chastise you or be a mean parent, they're just looking after you.'

Trish Harris, 35, died at the scene and leaves behind three children just days before the Christmas holiday. Also killed was Tyrone Jacobs, 24, whose son will turn 5 on New Year's Eve. It is suspected a vehicle that had been carjacked was used in the killing. It was later found torched. Dozens of shell casings littered the road and sidewalk, and large bullet holes tore through a mural on the wall of the market after the gunfire erupted around noon. Days later a small sad memorial grew on the spot where Trish lay dead. 'See those holes,' say a neighbor. 'Imagine what that gun did to someone's head.' A worker tending to a parked car with shattered glass spoke about moving here from the Middle East. 'Every day there we see people shot in the street, I don't want to see this here,' he said sadly. This brings the death toll in DC to 267, a 36 percent increase from last year. According to the Gun Violence Archive there have been 650 mass shootings nationwide to date.

Published SUNDAY, December 31, 2023: 'GUN VIOLENCE EPIDEMIC' Pictures by 4 time Pulitzer Prize winning ZUMA Press photographer Carol Guzy: To lose a child is like a heart ripped from the chest - the hardest and most unnatural loss. That awful phone call in the middle of the night. Remembering their last words. Too often it is young people doing the shooting - and doing the dying. In record numbers. Historically underserved communities and racial inequities contribute to a culture of gun violence with a disproportionate number of African Americans dead or incarcerated. Counselors talk about a higher proportion of emotional trauma that perpetually injures the soul. It leads to a loss of hope that kills as much as any bullet. According to the Gun Violence Archive, to date there have been 650 mass shootings nationwide, which doesn’t include individual street incidents that occur daily in cities like DC and Baltimore. Total number of deaths by guns is 33,886 - 1,378 teens and 295 children under 12. Homicides in the nation's capital surpassed 200 recently, up 35% from last year. As policy-makers debate gun control especially concerning assault weapons - the body count increases with innocents caught in the crossfire.

Carol Guzy

CAROL GUZY is an American documentary photojournalist. As a young girl, ZUMA Press photographer, Carol Guzy always wanted to be an artist. But as she was coming of age in a working-class family in Bethlehem, Pa., such an ambition seemed impossible. ''Everyone I knew said, 'Oh, if you're an artist, you'll starve,''' she recalls. ''You have to do something really practical.''' So Guzy chose to go to nursing school. Halfway through she realized she would not, could not, be a nurse. ''I was scared to death I was going to kill someone by making some stupid mistake,'' she laughs. So while she was trying to figure out what to do with her life, a friend gave her a camera and she took a photography course. Guzy fascination with photography led to an internship and then a job at the Miami Herald. In 1988 she moved to The Washington Post. Carol photographs have won four Pulitzer Prizes and three Photographer of the Year awards in the National Press Photographers' annual contest. ''I don't believe the Pulitzers belong to us, I think we just accept them for the people who are in our stories,'' said Guzy. ''They're the courageous ones.'' From her shots of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti to Albanian refugees fleeing violence in Kosovo, Guzy captures moments of disaster and human suffering:921
