The death toll now exceeds 5,350 people and more than 12,000 other people have been wounded. This latest count represents a sinister turning point in the conflict between Ukrainian troops and pro-Russian separatists that was supposed to have stopped with a ceasefire agreement in September. Bus stops and public transport, marketplaces, schools and kindergartens, hospitals and residential areas have become battlegrounds in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Pro-Russian separatist leader Alexander Zakharchenko says rebels aim to boost their forces to 100,000, as fighting with Ukraine's military intensifies. UN human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said there had been a 'clear breach of international humanitarian law.'
