Happy go lucky, 7-year-old LOVENSKY ALEXANDRE, had just endured two huge life changing ordeals. First the quake destroyed Lovensky's home and with it, his heart medicine was lost. Lovensky's desperate mother ended up at a Port-au-Prince clinic where Sacramento fire Cpt. Barbie Law was volunteering. Law called her doctor father, who got Sacramento's Sutter Medical Group heart specialists to provide a life saving free surgery.

Mar. 31, 2010 - Sacramento, California, U.S. - Two days after his arrival in the United States, a shirtless 7-year-old LOVENSKY ALEXANDRE waits during his first visit with Dr. Hessam Fallah, a pediatric cardiologist, for an evaluation before his heart surgery with Sacramento Metropolitan District Fire Capt. BARBIE LAW. He suffers from congenital heart defect and the doctor needs to determine if he can be operated on. Barbie Law volunteered her services in Haiti soon after the earthquake hit the country and decimated its capital city. During her month-long stay she met a 7-year-old boy at a Carrefour clinic where she was working and found out he had a condition that causes congestive heart failure. Compelled to help him, she found a doctor willing to operate on him and navigated immigration bureacracy and snafus to bring him to the United States.

Barbie Law brought LOVENSKY ALEXANDRE to a Sacramento Metropolitan fire station where he rode in a fire truck, was carried up the ladder of the fire truck and also was able to help lower the ladder. His mom, ROSELE DUCELUS, adjust his plastic fire helmet that he insisted on wearing backwards.

Roselene passed the time playing checkers as the energetic LOVENSKY ALEXANDRE (left) lay quiet in his bed and rarely showed his smile as he watched television. Dr. Nasirov said, 'He was in good spirit. He wasn't afraid or anything. ...this kid is pretty amazing. Being here, I think he felt safe and saved and loved.'

When Lovensky lived in Carrefour, Haiti he had no television, computer or computer games. Once he came to live the the LaGuerre's he learned how to play Wii and spent most of his time playing the game while he waited for his surgery and during his post-op recovery. May 12, 2010 - Port-Au-Prince, Haiti - Relief International drove Lovensky Alexandre and Roselene Ducelus and transported a 16-by-16-foot military tent donated from the Sacramento chapter of the United Nations Association to the hillside neighborhood of Carrefour located southwest of Port-au-Prince where they will living in the small yard of her niece. The dusty two-hour ten miles trip from the Port-au-Prince airport drove past many earthquake damaged structures and temporary living shelters of tents and salvaged materials.

Photographer and videographer Paul Kitagaki Jr. has traveled the world covering natural and human-caused disasters, documenting the lives of everyday Iraqis living under Saddam Hussein, Mexico City residents digging out of a deadly earthquake, Asian factory workers laboring for pennies to produce high-end athletic shoes for the U.S. and international athletes competing for gold at nine different Olympic Games. Kitagaki's work has been honored with dozens of photo awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, and been nominated for Emmys.
