Published TUESDAY January 20, 2026: 'ICE SURGE: A City On Edge' by ZUMA Press Photo-Journalist DAVE DECKER: A year into his second term, President Trump's pledge to stage the 'largest deportation operation in American history' targeting the more than 10 million unauthorized migrants living in the US has already made an indelible mark on the nation. Over 300,000 people have been deported, and a record 65,000 people are being held in detention centers. Meanwhile, data from Customs and Border Protection shows that unauthorized crossings at the southern border have plummeted. The focus of Operation Metro Surge, as the Trump administration has branded this latest immigration effort in the Twin City area, appears to have broadened beyond mass deportations and has included confrontations with anti-ICE protesters. The shooting of Renee Good and the scope of the deployment has heightened the tense mood in a nation already bitterly divided over immigration issues. Welcome to 'ICE SURGE: A City On Edge'
