Eighteen-year-old Charlie Russell joined his brothers, father, and over six million others who had little choice but to implant a pace maker or defibrillator to keep their hearts beating. To them, the recent flurry of safety alerts and recalls has had a rather sobering effect, proving that though the devices might be ingenious, they are also imperfect.
