Poverty’s Vicious Circle: Double Jeopardy, Poor and Disabled
The United Nations estimates that 10% of the world’s population are disabled. However, a disproportionate 20% of the world’s poor are disabled. The sources of disability include naturally and unnaturally caused birth defects, illness and disease. Developing countries fall victim to bad nutrition, inability to receive health care, poor sanitation, and lack of education. From the womb to the grave, the poor are more susceptible to injury.
