The Solovetsky Islands lie in the western White Sea, just south of the Arctic Circle and a thousand kilometres from Moscow - they have a long and dark history, once home to one of the worlds largest monasteries, then becoming one of the most feared secret Gulags in the Soviet Union - thousands perished here under Lenin's rule.
