Conflict in the southern Philippine region of Mindanao is as regular as the monsoon rains... Stifling poverty, government neglect and Islamic militancy have fueled multiple insurgencies over the last 30 years. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) - the largest separatist movement in the Philippines - has been fighting for an independent state since the late 1970’s - waging an armed struggle to create an independent Islamic state in the southern island of Mindanao for the country's 6 million Muslims.
